By Arc. Justin Mbam Ogodo The advent of the Colonial Administration into the Abakaliki area culminated in the pitching of the colonial administrative tents at Aba Nkaleke about 1904. The resulting conurbation centre became the nucleus of Abakaliki urban centre. The area then witnessed influx of people from different areas that came as civil servants, traders, artisans and other groups who settled around the Clerks Quarters and Government Reserved Area (GRA). The Hausa Community settled in what is now known as Hausa Quarters. While the Workers and other artisans patronized the Ophoke Aba Market derogatorily called kiri-kiri market by the Hausas, the Ubakpa (Abakpa) Market was exclusive for the Hausa/Fulani and Yoruba Communities who also had Muslim adherents.
